I suppose this is our final push for the finish line: in about four hours, we need to have the robot in some bag, and then we only get to look at it longingly until competition. Undoubtably, there will be some things that we still haven’t… optimized… by the time Bearmageddon’s bagged, but I’d say we’re making good progress in our mad dash for completion.

Mr. Harpster, Justin and I have been slowly making progress, testing our code against the actual robot.

For all of the things we have yet to finish tweaking, one thing has been dubbed complete until competition: the bumpers! After working on these things for weeks, and after a few recent days of vexation, they are [acceptable] for the championship robot!

Here’s to the last few hours of the grind!

~Taran T.

We worked on the pneumatics on the practice robot in order to have two completely working robots.

Alivia also milled out a few last parts.

Also, I tried to run the chain that runs the turret lift on the practice robot, but sadly, the distances were different on the two robots, and the length of chain that was needed is not possible, so we had to make the holes adjustable for tensioning.

BAG DAY!!!!!!!1

Well, ship date is finally here, and everyone is incredibly tired…

However, work must continue, even down to the wire. We finally ran full tests with our practice and competition robots, including ramp balancing, rail crossing, and fall preventing.

We also fashioned a makeshift camera mount for the shooter on the competition robot.

We mounted our turret, shooter, and all the pneumatics on our competition robot, and are almost ready to ship, with just a little work to be done in these last few hours.

…and somehow this happened

Hopefully, our robot will be completely up and running by tonight, as we do not have much to do, and we look forward to the regionals…..and sleep.

-Ben F.

On February 20, 2012 we were invited by one of our major sponsors, Boeing, to share about FIRST and Bear Metal with the employees of Boeing at the Developmental Center.
We met many employees who were unaware of FIRST and explained to them what the organization is.

Our friends, Skunkworks, from Aviation High School were also there. They demonstrated their 2011 robot while we shared our 2012 practice robot.

The students were very lucky to have the opportunity to have a behind the scenes tour of the Rapid Prototyping Production area if this specific Boeing plant. Here we learned about various forms of prototyping with a wide selection of materials. One main idea behind most of the machines was a 3D printing style of prototyping.

Unfortunately, we were unable to take pictures due to security policies of Boeing. Although, we were given some fancy rooks from the special tour, and took a picture of it back at our lab.

We were excited to have this opportunity and once again thank Boeing for being one of our major sponsors.

Today is mostly focussed on tying up loose ends for the robots. The phrase, ‘loose ends’ can be defined in a number of ways, from checking up on weight reduction to milling out those last few parts.

A group of students and mentors went to Boeing today and brought along our new practice robot. They took the opportunity to demonstrate a few of the functions of our robot, as well as meet some great people.

When they came back, they were able to give the rest of the team suggestions about how to make the robot work better. We took the advice, and Team Tiger (my team) spent today making improvements to our part, and catching up on any last minute fabrication.
