Girls’ Gen 2024: Comp in Review

This past weekend Bear Metal had the honor of hosting the 13th annual Girls’ Generation. This competition allows for girls and gender minorities to take the spotlight during competitions while giving them the opportunity to shine in STEAM activities.

Bear Metal started the weekend off strong showing an outstanding performance on the field during the first day. Their drive team worked diligently on strategy with the other teams, while their pits team worked around the clock to ensure the robot was competition ready. Though the competition was tough this weekend, Bear Metal persevered, ending in the top eight.

Coopertition is an essential component of every FIRST competition. Bear Metal made sure to include this in everything they did by always having an open and inviting pits, on top of having open access for all teams to use any tool in their shop. The team started off the second day better than the last, ending the qualification matches in 1st place, becoming the 1st alliance captain. Alliance selection being tough as always, Bear Metal allianced with 2910 (Jack in the Bot) and 5937(M.I. Robotics), which was a solid alliance going into the elimination bracket.

The Bear Metal media team works hard in the background, making content for the competition and social media. Bear Metal members also worked as FIRST volunteers making this competition possible. From AV to trash pickup, Bear Metal is working around the clock to make this competition possible.

Starting the elimination rounds off with a bang, the alliance achieved the event high score of 117. It's not all happy though, as their robot faced some difficulties during this match, with the amp arm and collector taking heavy damage. After some challenging repairs in the pits, their alliance was ready for their second match of eliminations.

The match ended in an unfortunate loss as defense from the opposing alliance was strong. The alliance faced many technical difficulties, putting them in the lower bracket, but not all hope was lost. Despite the confidence, the third match ended similarly to the previous, and their competition season ended there.

As the 2024 season comes to an end, Bear Metal does not regret a moment of it. From the beginning challenges of the first competitions, to the triumphs as Houston, we could not have done it without all of the teams we work with. Bear Metal looks forward to the 2025 season and can't wait to see you there and work with you.
